In this episode of Scriptease we’re breaking down a few scenes from Django Unchained to examine how we can foreshadow a turn in a script. On a first viewing, the primary focus for most audience members is the plot: The logical sequence of events being presented. Turns in a script are surprising changes in the direction of the story, but it’s important that this surprise doesn’t just come out of nowhere. The turn in Django Unchained is a perfect example of a surprise that is foreshadowed yet also flies under the radar, catching the audience off guard. By examining how Tarantino achieves this effect, we can learn how to create interesting turns in our own screenplays. *** Welcome to Scriptease!
